I Made Denis Artist-in-Residence Project 2013-14
During July 2013- June 2014 AIAA was very fortunate to continue to support the highly successful Artist-in-Residence Project with visiting Balinese musician I Made Denis from Tianyar, East Bali. Fortunately, this project was supported by the Myer Foundation via the Modern Language Teachers Assoc Qld (MLTAQ) Indonesian Teachers Network involving 16 schools across Southern Qld and now including the Sunshine Coast. Many thanks to the Coordinator Sheila Kunarajah, Indonesian teacher from Bundamba Public School . The Made Denis project has been AIAA’s most successful Residency to date and continued into 2014. The project has been highly valuable for both the visiting artist and for the Australian community.
The project has been very successful in creating participation and collaboration with people of all ages across a broad spectrum of the Australian community and across a wide geographical area. The project involved direct participation and experience of Balinese Kecak Dance and Balinese traditional gamelan and contemporary music, as well as Sundanese Angklung, Silat, Balinese Offerings, Balinese, Javanese and Sumatran Dance workshops and performances. Very special thanks to our generous sponsor Gamelan Gigi Jaya Toowoomba for providing the use of their Balinese Gamelan Orhcestra.
While resident in the Southern Qld area Mr I Made Denis worked intensively in the following areas:
1. Teaching and performing at primary and high schools across Australia
2. Leading Balinese Gamelan Groups in Byron Bay and Southport
3. Collaborating and performing with Australian and Indonesian musicians
4. Presenting performances of Balinese Gamelan Music and culture at festivals and music venues such as Byron Bay Harmony Festival, Gold Coast Indonesian Events and Uplift Festival Byron Bay.
In QLD: Made Denis and Judy Shelley worked closely with Kerry O’Connor and the Modern Language Teachers Assoc Qld – Indonesian Network to create a fantastic project called Bringing Bali to Brisbane. The Teachers received a grant of $10000 from the Myer Foundation which paid for Made Denis to travel all over Southern Qld presenting series of 2-3 days workshops and performances in Balinese Gamelan, Kecak and Angklung at each school. Schools involved included Browns Plains SHS, Woodridge SHS, Harristown SHS, Park Ridge SHS, Yugembir State School, Browns Plains State School, Woodridge High School, Ormeau Woods HS, Patrick Rd State School, Ferny Grove High School, Boronia Heights State School, Bundamba SS plus Sunshine Coast Schools Meridan High School, Burnside SHS, St Johns Catholic School, Bribie Island SHS and Sheldon College.
Sunshine Coast University Joint Project
AIAA had the wonderful opportunity to work in conjunction with Philip Mahnken Senior Lecturer in Indonesian Studies to present a cultural exchange project in the Sunshine Coast Region in order to promote enrolment in Indonesian studies by Bpk Phil and Made Denis undertaking a tour of Sunshine Coast and Brisbane schools. This project was funded with a grant from the Australia Indonesia Institute. This project ran at the same time as the MLTAQ project during late 2013.
NSW Dept of Education Musician in Residence
Due to Judy Shelley and Made Denis attending the Indonesian Consulate in Sydney NSW Teachers Celebration, AIAA was successful in applying for a grant from the Dept of Education NSW of $10,000 to fund Made Denis to visit 20 NSW schools to teach Gamelan, angklung, kecak and Balinese offerings. Made Denis received extremely positive feedback from schools across NSW and the teachers hoped he would be able to come back in the future.
Dewa Made Nurjana
Balinese Master Musician Dewa Made Nurjana visited Australia in December 2013 with Gamelan Master Bpk Ketut Lanus to perform at the Uplift Festival 2013 in Byron Bay. AIAA was able to assist Bpk Dewa by providing the use of the Balinese gamelan as well as Made Denis and Bpk Agung Pindha assisting with performing with the group. When Judy Shelley visited Bali in early 2014 Bpk Dewa assisted AIAA by providing contacts and assisting with networking with the Balinese government and National government and a number of proposals were sent for funding a proposed tour to Australia. Contact was also made with the Australian Consul General. Judy Shelley then initiated a project with the NSW University whereby the gamelan group will be participating in the Bali Arts Festival 2015.
In 2014 Bpk Dewa also visited Sydney and AIAA assisted him in providing contacts with adult gamelan groups such as the Balinese Community Gamelan and NSW Uni Gamelan, working together with Made Denis.
As a direct result of this visit Bpk Dewa will return to work together with the Uni of NSW Gamelan to compose collaborate and then perform together at the Bali Arts Festival in June 2015, supported by the University and the Australian Consulate in Bali.
Byron Harmony Festival 2014
In 2014 our Annual Byron Harmony Festival was again held in Railway Park Byron Bay in collaboration with the Byron Artisan Market who provided the DA, marquees and promotion. The Festival was coordinated by Corinne Sinclair assisted by the AIAA subcommittee- Byron Harmony Team and was a huge success for AIAA and the Nth Coast community. Supported by a $500 grant from the Community Relations Commission of NSW the one day festival involved a very wide representation of the many indigenous and multicultural communities that live in the North Coast and incorporated a wide variety of performances by local cultural groups and artists.
People who attended and participated were very appreciative to be involved in the Byron Harmony Day event and all performers generously volunteered their time. The Festival attracted the participation of about 300 performers, volunteers and workshop leaders and attracted an audience of approx 800.
Byron Harmony Day 2014 involved people from many ethnic groups including Indigenous, Latin American, French, Brazilian, Indonesian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Thai, African and Spanish.

Suara Indonesia Radio Show
During 2013-14 Suara Indonesia Radio Show was presented by Francesca Von Reinhaart and Kirana Talip until October 2013 after which the show took a break and will commence retraining presenters in February 2015. Suara Indonesia presented many hours of interesting live interviews, music, CD reviews, news and Indonesian community events for the community of the NSW North Coast and beyond. The program was streaming live every Wednesday 12-1pm at www.bayfm.org
AIAA Support for Members and Cultural Organisations
The AIAA Board and National Coodinator support many other Australian and Indonesian organizations and individual artists with performances, information, support letters and guidance for their projects as well as undertaking community action and fundraising.
For example, many thanks to John Lewis AIAA Board member who assisted Marissa Fior Australian Puppeteer & Installation artist, with a grant application for a cultural exchange project based in Australia, Bali & Lombok, with an Indonesian visual artist. The plan was for him to visit Australia as well as collaborate in Indonesia. Many thanks for all the hard work and support over the years including connecting and networking with many artists and interested people eg Snuff Puppets.
Judy Shelley has been assisting Bali Arts Magazine to make connections with Australians such as Marisa Fior, Aust Consul General, Dee Tipping and other Australian Artists.
