In “stepping stones” I hope to convey the close connection between our two countries and peoples. The foam bubbles represent stepping stones, islands, connecting us across the seas. The red sea symbolising the colour of our common blood also the desire, to not only nurture our friendship, but also celebrate, share and embrace our diversity. My imagination
was first fuelled as a kid in ’72 listening to my cousin john’s
tales of travelling and surfing in and around the islands of Bali and
Java. I eventually found my way to Sumatra and Bali some years later on
the tail end of a sailing trip with some friends into the Indian Ocean
from Darwin. We immediately fell in love with the people and culture and
were privileged to spend time with a really special family in Sumatra. David Williams |
