Asialink

Ford Foundation supports Asialink

By Susan Strano

Asialink's Artists in Residency program sends Australian artist into the Asia Region on cultural exchange. Over the last few years we have been looking for ways to bring the important dimension of reciprocity to our work and have piloted projects of internships and individual residencies, mostly from Indonesia. The Australia-Indonesia Insitute has been active in encouraging this type of activity and currently funds one out of four residencies to come from Indonesia to Australia each year.

However, making reciprocity work relies on strong, committed partners in other countries to contribute to the two-way exchange. Between 1998 and 2000 the Ford Foundation supported a program to bring three arts managers from Indonesia to work with organisations in Australia. The lessons learned, and needs that emerged from this 'pilot' led Asialink and its Indonesian partner, Yayasan Kelola (a non-government organisation based in Solo), to apply to the Ford Foundation in Jakarta for a more significant program. And… success!

The three-year program (with the working title 'Indonesian Internship program') will offer experience and opportunities to Indonesian artists and arts managers through internships with Australian Arts organisations, master classes and workshops in Indonesia and seed funding for follow-up projects in Indonesia.

The Australian leg of the program - the placements with Australian arts organisations - is called Operasi: Kembali ('Operation Welcome') to emphasise the role we will be playing as host and the responsibilities and opportunities inherent in the relationship.

Australian's are hospitable, welcoming and genuinely interested in foreign visitors, particularly from Asia. However, our arts organisations have little experience of hosting international visitors for long stretches of time and it can put a strain on their cash strapped resources. The benefits for an Australian organisation in hosting an Indonesian curator, artistic director or arts coordinator can be manifold if expectations are adequately matched. Here lies the crux of the matter.

Operasi: Kembali will identify the expectations and offerings of Australian organisations - profiles of potential hosts are being developed to use as a tool to begin matching Indonesian candidates. Cross-cultural communication will be a continuous negotiation but we are trying to find a common language to navigate the crucial stage of putting people together.

We are identifying mechanisms to support organisations that host a visitor and resources required offering the best possible experience. Being a good host also means having a central contact / 'critical friend'; offering the personal touch with airport pick, welcome and introductions; providing a working space; finding accommodation; and linking the visitor with other people of interest to them.

Operasi: Kembali will just be one stage in a process of capacity building for the arts community of Indonesia. The program will involve workshops and master classes to be run in Indonesia by Asian and Australian practitioners and significantly, a fund to allow for the implementation of some projects arising from the internships. Returning artists will be encouraged to develop projects that will further their vision for their work: ideas they may have formed during their placement. The end result will, no doubt, be closer relationships between Indonesian and Australian arts practitioners and the enrichment of cultural exchange.
