Herb Feith Memorial

Dear friends and colleagues

The Monash University community, indeed the Indonesianist community worldwide, is in mourning following the sudden loss of Herbert Feith in an accident early evening yesterday in Melbourne. Herb was struck by a train and killed as he made his way through the Glen Iris railway crossing near his home. Earlier in the day, he had been at Monash Clayton campus for a meeting and lunch with old friends, including Prof John Legge and Prof Wang Gungwu.

Herb Feith was on the academic staff of the Department of Politics at Monash Univeristy from 1962 until he retired in 1990. He became Professor in 1968 and in 1975 he stepped down from the Chair, resuming the rank of Reader, so as to concentrate on research. Between his visits to Indonesia, where he was a Visiting Professor over almost 10 years at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Herb remained a regular at Monash Centre of Southeast Asian Studies seminars and events. Whenever he gave a seminar himself, we needed to book a larger room as so many people would come from all over Melbourne to hear him.

Herb had a depth of knowledge and immersion in Indonesian society, from the formative years of the nation-state through to recent times, the like of which we will not see again. He was a brilliant man, yet humble in his devotion to his students. As everyone who knew him will attest, Herb was someone who lived the adage 'tread lightly on the earth'. He was not only widely respected, he was loved and admired for his near saintly qualities.

On behalf of members of the Centre of Southeast Asian Studies and the wider Monash University community, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Herb's wife and great companion, Betty, and our heartfelt condolences to his three adult children, David, Annie and Robbie, and to his grandchildren.

A Memorial Service was held in the Monash Religious Centre, Clayton campus on 21st November.

Geoff Fox - Melbourne Poet

29 November 2001

Guru Kanguru

I have visited Indonesia every year, writing poetry, since 1990. In 1993, i met my first Indonesian poet, Jose Rizal Manua. In subsequent years I met Wiji Thukul, Omi Intan Naomi, Oka Rusmini, Dorothea Rosa Herliahy, Emha Ainun Najib, Aspar Paturusi, Sitok Srengenge, Abidah El Khaliquy, Yuyum Atmadja, Irna Hidayati, Taufiq Ismail, Sipon Dyuh Sujirah, Mustofa Bisri and Endang.

My free versons of their poetry constitute a very large and varied body of work. I have performed this work at many venues and festivals in Melbourne. In collaboration with various singers and musicians I have produced recordings which have been broadcast by RN and JJJ. Our work has been well reported in the "Jakarta Post" and "Gatra".

My main interests now are asmaulhusnah and indonesian women's poetry. This year, I sponsored a poetry competition which produced 3 winners all of whom I will help, insyaallah, to become writers in residence at various javanese schools.

Call for New Archives Additions

The American Gamelan Institute Archives strives to be a resource forplayers and scholars of gamelan and related arts. There is a researchcollection on site, and a "distribution collection" consisting of items wehave permission to reproduce for a service fee.

Available materials includemonographs, master's theses, books of notation, CDs, videos, and scores forcompositions. In the interest of documenting the art and development ofgamelan and related traditions, the AGI Archives has an open policy forhousing and distributing materials.

Recently, a library service in Singapore acquired most of the distributioncollection. This will make the collection more easily availalble toinsitutions and individuals in Asia.(Duplicates of the large collection nowin preparation are also availalble for a substantial discount -- inquirefor special library rates.)

Knowing that the community we will reach is growing, we would like toinvite scholars, teachers and composers to submit new materials fordistribution. These can be sent in paper, disk or electronic forms. Ourgoal is to make resources available that would otherwise be impossible toacquire, so materials easily available elsewhere need not be submitted.Submissions may be made at any time; royalties are paid for scores, andother items by arrangement.

Please join us in an expansion of the AGI Archives! We welcome comments, questions, submissions and suggestions, and look forward to working withcurrent and new authors and composers.
