AIAA Work for the Dole 2002

2002 has again been a fruitful and exciting year for the AIAA organisation. Participants in the Work for the Dole Project 2002 have played a large role in the many projects we have so far undertaken this year. As the second year of AIAA Work for the Dole draws to a close, it is time to take stock and reflect on the goings on gone inside the square blue room of the YAC, the Youth Activities Centre, Byron Bay.

From ten participants, five people have seen the project through to the end. In between we have learnt computer skills, communication skills, and been involved in the ebbs and flows of AIAA projects. Overseeing the unfolding of projects, Judy Shelley has harnessed our skills and directed them into the organisation and maintenance of AIAA. Carol Chapman and Daniel Summerfield have supervised us and installed their computer expertise into the AIAA website and the Work for the Dole Project.

2002 Projects: Australia Indonesia Poetry Exchange, Inspirasi Magazine, Suara Indonesia Radio Show, Wahyu Roche; Musician in Residence and maintenance of the AIAA website.

Here are some comments from the participants;

Paul
The project has given me both direction and opportunity for advancing skills in multimedia, which in turn led to co-presenting radio shows, video work and being somewhat more proficient with web design, both here in Australia and internationally.

Kim
Being here has enabled me to develop my research, social, creative and design skills.

Craig
Has really advanced my computer skills while narrowing down on the best way to promote performers and artists; a great experience.

Jefferson
Picking up on fundamental internet and computer skills has been a rewarding and valuable experience, contributing to work options and networking potentials.

Judy Shelley
I am really excited about this project. The participants are a fantastic group of people with a huge range of skills and talents. They are achieving a fantastic amount and I hope they're enjoying this project as much as I am.

Inspirasi

Getting out the lastest edition of Inspirasi was the main focus of the Work for the Dole Project in the first few months. The magazine is a document of Indonesian cultural news and events. During this time participants learnt how to write in the language of the internet, summarise articles and create new web pages for Inspirasi. Now as the project draws to a close we are putting the finishing touches on Inspirasi 12

Australia Indonesia Poetry Exchange 2002

The Australia Indonesia Poetry Exchange involved three main poets, Emha Ainun Nadjib and Fatin Hamamah from Indonesia and Pamela Hardy from Brisbane, reading in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and the Northern Rivers. The project involved much organisation, communication with participating organisations going on for months before the project commenced in May 2002. WFD participant Craig Raynor made many of the initial contacts for the project helping Judy co-ordinate the project through to its successful completion.

Warogus Musician-in-Residence

WFD participants supported the Warogus Musician-in-Residence project with Wahyu Roche by helping with correspondence, promotion, telephoning, interviewing and website presentation of the project, as well as having a jam with Wahyu at the Youth Activities Centre.

Suara Indonesia Radio Show

Paul Francis from the AIAA Wfd Team has become involved in Suara Indonesia as a regular presenter on the show and is now fully trained in radio panel, presenting, interviewing, play list etc Paul has also helped out by videoing AIAA activities and events, which will be used in the production of an AIAA CRD-rom. Other members of the team have prepared news and interviews for the radio show as well as producing a catalogue of all Indonesian CDs in the BayFM library.
