Voices Across Java
Since 1986, Voices From The Vacant Lot have built a strong audience for their breathtaking live a cappella shows and have developed a truly distinctive sound. Their repertoire features music, percussion and ancient instruments from many traditions across the world, along with contemporary original pieces. On 6 July Voices from the vacant lot toured Indonesia, performing at the Grand Concert Hall in Jakarta and in large, funky venues in Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. They performed with local guest a cappella groups and enjoyed sharing their material and learning new songs from fellow artists at concerts and Voices workshops. Indonesia has a strong choral tradition and is currently experiencing a surge of interest in mostly a cappella groups, including Gospel and Muslim religious choral music. Voices is the first strictly a cappella group to tour Indonesia and were looking forward to generating more regional interest in not just Voices but also the Australian a cappella scene in general.
The Voices From the Vacant Lot tour has been supported by the Australia Indonesia Institute, the NSW Ministry for the arts and Wot Cross Cultural Synergy.
