Work for the Dole Project

The Australia Indonesia Arts Alliance Work For the Dole Project continues for 2005. Particpants are given training and support in various skill areas including event management and web design as well as computer skills and community development. AIAA is very thankful to Ballina Employment and Training Centre and DEWB for their ongoing support.

The current WFD project for Feb-July 2005 is the presentation of Inspirasi Indonesian Arts Festival - a one month festival of Indonesian Arts and Culture in Byron Shire.WFD Participants on the project have been involved in every aspect of preparing for the Festival including poster design, press releases, photography, project coordination, sponsorships, grants and fundraising, web design, graphic design, radio presenting and many other activities.

The following are comments from some of the participants who have been working on the project so far -

Kirana Talip

I have learnt to manage my time effectively and weekly reports to supervisors at office meetings enables me to be responsible for work that I need to complete. I have learnt to work with a team and to share tasks in order to get the job done. Also as the co-ordinator for the photographic exhibition "Portraits of Love" I have been able to be a creative artist in a business scope. I love working here because I feel connected to the Indonesian and Australian community of Byron and beyond.

Through working with the AIAA I’ve learnt about web design using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and Adobe Photoshop 7.0. I’ve also familiarised myself with digital cameras. My internet skills have developed by researching films to view, e-mailing contacts and general re-organization. This project has helped me develop my computer skills and phone communication skills. The cultural aspects of Indonesian life are interesting to learn about, especially the music, dancing and literature. The crew from AIAA are great to work with, they are very friendly and helpful which makes it easier to feel part of a team.

Susanna Bergmann

Through the AIAA I am gathering insights into how to set up a big event or festival. I’m enjoying learning how to connect people together as I like working within communities and as part of a team. The tasks that I have been allocated reflect my interests and best utilise my talents. I am working on the feast, which is a major event in the upcoming Inspirasi Indonesian Arts Festival. I’m also organising a healing tent for the festival finale.

Jarrah Mahony

During my 4 weeks involved with the AIAA I have been responsible for securing national sponsorship and promotion for the organization with a particular emphasis on the upcoming Inspirasi Indonesian Festival. Additional skills that I have learnt are event managing, the planning, design and implementation of new concepts and a greater development of my existing computer skills. It’s great to be part of a practical assignment where our efforts are rewarded by seeing the project completed in a short length of time. I am also enjoying the opportunity of interacting within the business community fostering long-term relationships between commerce and art and culture.

Clare Detchon

It has been fun to be with the people doing the project so far.
I have learnt more about Indonesian culture and art forms.
I am developing skills in event management, which is a career that I am interested in. I am furthering my computer skills as well as learning grant research and writing skills, setting up spreadsheets, observing coordination projects, participating in morning meetings and division of jobs.

Carly Rawson

Through working with the AIAA I have achieved a greater appreciation of the cultural richness of Indonesia, and learnt how through alliances such as these we can promote diversity and understanding. There are many practical skills that I stand to learn involving computers, event organization and interacting within a broader community. The team at AIAA are helping me to realise my aspirations towards professional writing by directing me towards word-based activities.
