Sisa : re-use, collaborations and cultural activism from Indonesia

6 November – 7 December 2007

Opening Tuesday 6 November 6-8pm

UTS Gallery: Level 4, 702 Harris St, Ultimo | Mon-Fri 12-6pm | T: +612 9514 1652

Sisa is the Indonesian word for ‘remains’ or ‘leftovers’. Located between folk art, design, and public intervention, this exhibition finds new forms of expression in the rejection of hyper-consumption and overdevelopment.

Focusing on the issues associated with artistic output in the collaborative settings of contemporary Indonesian environmental activism, many of these artworks were not designed for display in galleries, or for an Australian audience. They include research, adaptations, documentation, and the products of ongoing collaborative projects.

Lest We Forget Echoes of Peace

Pray for Peace in Bali - Mass Rally in Denpasar, October 11, 2007.

To commemorate the loss of 202 lives in the October 12, 2002 terrorism
attack on Bali and a second attack on October 1, 2005 that claimed 20
lives, a mass prayer gathering was held at the Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat
Bali (Monument of the People of Bali's Struggle) on Thursday, October 11,
2007.

Open to all people who love peace, the mass rally commenced at 4:30 p.m.
including prayers and musical contributions from all the major religious
faiths found in Bali.

Participants were asked to wear traditional national dress, bring candles and
carry banners with messages in support of peace and harmony.

Based on past events, organizers were expecting 15,000 people to attend the
event dubbed Gema Perdamaian or Echoes of Peace.

The organizers, who have made the gathering in the center of Bali's capital
of Denpasar an annual event, say the event is intended to underline the
"spirit of Bali" which is based on love and peace without reference to
issues of race, tribe, culture or religion.
