2000 Drawings - Singapore
Post-Ulu 1999
Dear Friends,
The Artists Village is organising 'Post-Ulu' a year end show at The Substation. In one of the activities of this event, participating artists will attempt to complete 2000 pieces of drawings. This is not to commemorate the coming new millenium, but to ask ourselves what the 'new millenium' means to us. Some chose to ignore it, and some choose to celebrate over it. In Post-Ulu, we have decided to create over it.
By drawing, what we meant here is to make visual markings, as a record and testimonial of time, reflecting on individual's creative intention or concern and exploring one's idea through the process of drawing. After the completion of the last of the 2000 Drawings, they will be compiled as a collective effort from many individuals and will be shown in future art exhibitions that will be organised to follow up with 'Post-Ulu'. We hope to explore more with creative processes by embarking on ideas from the 2000 Drawings, in doing so, produce object-based and time-based works from it.
As co-ordinator of this 2000 Drawings project, I am inviting you to join us by taking part in 'Post-Ulu'.
We will be at The Substation's Gallery starting from 28th Dec to put the 2000 Drawings project into action. This project may take two to three working days to be completed, so by 1st Jan 2000, the last drawing should be completed. You may like to take part by visiting'Post-Ulu', we will be opened from 10am to 10pm daily in the gallery. You can come with a finished
drawing or come empty handed with the intention to create. There will be materials provided for you or you can bring your own medium to use. Alternatively, if you cannot be present on either one of these days during this project, you can send your drawings from 1stDec to 30th Dec 1999 . please send your drawings together with your full name and contact address to:

A quote from an experienced artist who have done this before, in "The Drawing Show" in the past during Dec 1989, "He or she may use it maybe as a means of exploring their ideas and concepts,or a response to the visual imagery and events around him or he may be exploring the potential qualities of materials used for that drawing . Drawingthen is an important vehicle for recording and investigating in the artist's own visual langauge".

Rantos and Tillies Duo
Presented by Yayasan Polosseni, STSI - Bali, Amanresort and Ansett Australia Heralding the new millennium, will be the brilliant duo, Brachi Tilles (piano) and Spiros Rantos (violin), performing an open concert for the public on the 6th January proudly sponsored by Ansett Australia. The concert will be presented at 7pm in the Natya Mandala at the Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia (STSI), Jalan Nusa Indah, Denpasar. If you wish to receive an invitation ring Yayasan Polosseni on 975 869 or write to PO Box 56, Ubud, Bali by the 4th January 2000. The Duo is famous for combining Viennese finesse with Mediterranean temperament in their repertoire which includes such classics as Beethoven's Rondino, Rachmaninov's Margaritas, Ravel Habanera and Brahms' Scherzo. They play music from different worlds featuring folk and gypsy themes which are fresh, lively and full of virtuosity - Konstantinides Greek dances, Bartok Roumanian Dances and De Fella Dance Espagnole. Central European refinement and Southern charm and warmth give special magic to their performance. A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of a collaboration between a number of Balinese composers including I Wayan Gandra, from Bali as the overseer and the Duo in composing a piece for the Millennium that features Western instruments (violin and piano) and Balinese instruments. It was Vienna, Austria, the city of music where Greek-born Spiros Rantos ( composer/conductor, violinist) and Israeli-born Brachi Tilles (pianist) started their musical partnership. Since 1976, they have been residents in Australia whilst keeping up touring and performance commitments overseas with groups such as the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Harmonia Mundi, Ensemble I and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. Spiros is the founder, artistic director and conductor of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra which has its own series in Melbourne and has toured the USA, Europe and East Asia. These concert series have received wide acclaim and excellent reviews. " The finest for years" - John Sinclair, The Herald; "amongst the best in the country" - Tony Gould, The Sun. Tilles appears as a soloist with numerous orchestras, in chamber music with ENSEMBLE I and in recitals with various artists. She frequently records for ABC and tours Australia and Europe on a regular basis and has recently returned from a tour to the Middle East. Whilst other areas of Indonesia such as Jakarta and Bandung are familiar with western classical music, it is rare for a duo of this caliber to perform in Bali. Ansett Australia and Amanresort in conjunction with the Yayasan Polosseni have been working together to present this concert for the pleasure and enjoyment of the people of Bali and is an opportunity to experience the rhythms and melodies from different worlds and times. Date : 6th January 2000
Time: 7pm

This millenium new year's eve at the Bali Cliff Resort will feature something borrowed, something new and something bamboo with the hotel managing to create a musical bridge between lovers of traditional Indonesian music and members of the Pentium generation.
The highlight of the last night of the millenium will be a live concert of a "modified" traditional "angklung" Bamboo orchestra.
Did we say modified? Stay tuned. The Indonesian "angklung" is typically made from pieces of hanging bamboo that are shaken and struck by as many as 20 to 40 musicians to create a very Indonesian musical sound. But this millennium at the Bali Cliff, Julius Abyasa, the inventor and winner of the Asian innovation awards from The Far Eastern Economic Review magazine will
entertain with his invention - the "Electric Angklung." The "Electric Angklung" consists of rows of bamboo "angklungs" arranged in such way that they can be played by a Soloist who presses keys, much like a piano.
To round out the night, the century, and the millenium- a traditional Indonesian magical show, a Balinese cultural performance, a fortuneteller, body painters and a host of other "surprises" are all promised. Each course of the evening's meal will also be accompanied by a special dance performance.
The event starts from 1900 hours on 31 December 1999 and ends sometime in the next millennium.

Gyre: Song for a Millennium– in Minneapolis
Friday, November to December 30
"This exuberant masked dance is created in collaboration with The Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble, with puppets and masks created by puppeteers from In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, music by Joko Sutrisno, percussive dance by Joe Chvala and additional choreographyby Tri Sutrisno. Directed by Sandy Spieler.
A ceremony of sorts, GYRE is a soaring and meditative prayer to greet a new millennium. Act two is a moment to consider our human place in the mysterious swirl of matter and spirit we wrestle with
daily."
The gamelan music carries the narrative thread- there's not much dialogue - and consists mostly of traditional pieces from Central Java, with some new music written for the show by Pak Joko.
Shows at 7:30 Friday and Saturday evenings, and 2:00 Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Additional afternoon and evening shows December 28, 29, 30. All shows at the Heart of the Beast Theater, 1500 East Lake Street in South Minneapolis. Call (612) 721-2535 for ticket info and reservations.

Four Prominent Artists at Padma Hotel
To start the new millenium, from January 7 – 16, 2000, The Hotel Padma Bali will present an art exhibition of four leading Indonesian contemporary artists. All graduates of the Yogyakarta Art Institute in Central Java, the four well-know artists bring their own individual styles to kick off the year with his important exhibition of Indonesian art.
Nasirun is famous for his adoption of Javanese mythologies, legends, and tradition to his paintings. With unique use of strong colors, bold lines, and spontaneous brushstrokes, exotic and sometimes sacred themes are transformed into colossal works of art.
Balinese artist I Made Djirna explores rich textures in his mystically powerful paintings. He is one of the most highly regarded figures in the contemporary Indonesian art scene today.
Yunizar is the most recent graduate of the Institute has achieved a mature style rich in colors that are very poetic, deeply contemplative, and eminently tasteful.
The only non-painter in the show, Syahrizal is a multi-skilled sculptor. An outstanding figure amongst young Indonesian sculptors, he uses bronze, copper, wood, stones, and other for his dynamic sculptures.
