Abdul Latief, Author
Abdul Latief is a former colonel in the Indonesian Armed Forces. In 1965, following the so-called September Thirtieth Movement, he was arrested and charged with treason. A military tribunal striped him of his rank and sentenced him to life imprisonment. In 1998, this sentence as commuted and he was released. His pieve in this issue is from the unpublished manuscript of his defense before the High Military Court
Ratna Sarumpaet, Author
Ratna Sarumpaet was born in Tarutung, North Sumatra, in 1949. At the age of twenty, she began a theater career, staging and acting in numerous Western dramas. Later, she worked in television and film, then returned to the theater in 1989, avidly supporting political causes through her writing

The world of wayang - the shadow and rod puppet theaters of Java, Bali, Lombok, and other parts of Indonesia, is enticing and fascinating, yet it has remained essentially inaccessible for those not familiar with the specific languages and traditions of each region. This bilingual series of translations from wayang theater performances in Java and Sunda opens a new window onto this vibrant and socially-responsive world.
