A Child's Eye
'A Child's Eye' is an amazingly innovative project which combines social awareness with photography to create change in the lives of homeless children in Jakarta. The mission of 'A Child's Eye' is to raise awareness of children's social welfare issues and to promote the funding of children's welfare initiatives. The project enables children to express themselves through the creative arts and provides forums for the display, discussion and sale of their work.
The central aim is to improve children's mental and emotional well-being, as well as their material standards of living, as essential to the foundation of a peaceful, prosperous and humane way of life for future generations. Working in co-operation with other children's organisations, A Child's Eye provides a way for children to freely express themselves. It also provides education and information on the issues that affect children's lives and raises public awareness of the problems and issues which affect their lives, including sexual abuse, drug abuse, healthcare, poverty and environmental degradation. A Child's Eye's first project was a series of photography workshops for 35 street and scavenger children in Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently the group are working with the five children's organisations who participated in the photography workshops, developing further arts projects. These projects involve more children and have a more local focus than the photography workshops. The aim is to supplement or introduce health, education or money-making programmes for children in their own environment.
A message from A Child's Eye Action Group: "You might like to know that the website is currently being reworked and will be relaunched late June. We will be able to sell the pictures on the web and the plan for the future is to link all children throughout indonesia participating in photography workshops to each other and to the web. The plan is to do photography workshops with children in need around this incredibly diverse, fascinating and troubled archipelago. We are also running great workshops for street kids at a social worker's school in South Jakarta at the moment. 45 (and growing) kids doing handicraft, cooking and sewing, making loads of noise, loads of mess and having loads of fun. Keep in touch, and thanks again for the encouragement."
