Anin Murak - Songs of Timor Loro Sa'e

Review by Paulien Long and Judy Shelley

"It's time to reap the rice and sing
Everyone from Timor Loro Sa'e"
(from "Sama Hare" or "Harvesting the Rice"
track 10, Anin Murak)

This inspiring compilation of acapella music is directed by East Timorese composer/arranger Paulo Pereira dos Santos, and performed by the St Cecilia Choir from the parish of Balide, Dilli.

This CD is a selection of traditional East Timorese songs combined with a number of freedom and independence anthems which are sung with great passion and heart-felt emotion by the joyful young singers. The songs refelct the deep connection that the people feel with their land and the natural environment of their native home. So much so that it is sometimes hard to tell the traditional songs from the very poetic and nature-loving independence songs.

In 2000 Paulo Pereira brought part of this choir to New South Wales for the world's first tour of a Timorese choir outside Timor. The 23 choristers can be heard on this recording as Anin Murak (Golden Wind), singing traditional and new Timorese songs, mostly in Tetun, East Timor's main language.

It is to be hoped that through this and similar recordings many people will begin to experience Timorese music, truly a gift to the world.
