Beat Festival

A double CD of material recorded at the 1999 BEAT International Gamelan Festival has been released.

This festival took place in Wellington, New Zealand in March last year and brought together gamelanists from throughout NZ, with international representation from Australia, USA, the Netherlands, Singapore and of course Indonesia (Bali, Java, Sunda and Minangkabau).

CD1contains recordings of new compositions played by Gamelan Padhang Moncar (led by Budi Putra), and CD2 gives a sampling of other ensembles.

Among the participants at the festival were our former teachers, Joko Sutrisno and Midiyanto, and other prominent Indonesian musicians including Rafiloza, IWayan Lantir, dalangs Anak Agung Anon and Joko Susilo, Pak Hardjo Susilo, Pak Rahayu Supanggah, Dody Satya Ekagustidiman, Ismet Ruchimat, Agus Supriawan, Wahyu Roche etc....(If I start mentioning some of our non-Indonesian guests I would be afraid of forgetting someone important, but simply to say that we have a wonderful week of music- and friendship-making!)

This CD is a kaleidoscopic portrait of that meeting, with lots of new compositions which take gamelan into all sorts of new and unexpected directions.

We've sent off copies to everyone who participated in the festival - slow post to save on postage. But extra copies are available to anyone interested. Best thing if it can be by exchange - our CD for yours. Otherwise the cost is NZ$25, (postage included).

Also available is a CD RAFILOZA AND FRIENDS, performances by Rafiloza bin Rafii (rabab pasisia, saluang etc), some tracks traditional and others collaborative compositions and improvisations with New Zealand musicians, the results of Rafiloza's six month residency at Victoria University. Available at $20 (postage included). A vivid portrait of this extraordinarily versatile musician.
