I Made Denis

I Made, Balinese Musician in Residence 2010-2015

I Made Denis is a Balinese gamelan musician originally from the traditional village of Tianyar, East Bali who will be visiting Australia during May-July 2010. Made Denis has been performing Balinese gamelan and traditional arts for approx 20 years and is a member of one of Tianyar’s keluarga budaya – a well known cultural family and a member of the Yowana Gita Sasmita gamelan group, Tianyar. Made Denis will be visiting Australia to provide support for gamelan groups and to collaborate with Australian musicians during his residency.
Denis is currently based in Kuta and is available as a cultural guide for visitors to Bali – to have a chance to see traditional village life and be introduced to traditional Balinese culture, gamelan groups and teachers.
I Made Denis is a Balinese gamelan musician originally from the traditional village of Tianyar, East Bali who commenced his Residency project in Australia with his first visit during May-July 2010.


Made Denis is a highly skilled and experienced Balinese gamelan musician and leader who has been performing Balinese gamelan and traditional arts for approx 20 years and is a member of one of Tianyar’s keluarga budaya – a well known cultural family and a member of the Yowana Gita Sasmita gamelan group Tianyar. The Musician in Residence Projects undertaken by Made Denis over a 5 year period saw him tour extensively around Australia many times, performing music and undertaking workshops in Balinese gamelan, bamboo angklung and Balinese Kecak dance while at the same time providing support for local Australian gamelan groups in Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Sydney and also collaborating with Australian musicians and artists throughout Australia.
Denis is currently based in Bali and is available as a gamelan teacher, performer and cultural tour guide for visitors to Bali – he will provide the opportunity to see traditional village life and be introduced to traditional Balinese culture, gamelan groups, music, dance, art and craft teachers.
