Bali Passions: Island Obsessions
Chia Hearn Chek's first solo painting exhibition
Guest of Honour: Prof. S. Gopinathan
Dean of Foundation Programmes,
National Institute of Education, Singapore
Thursday 3rd October 2002, 7.30pm
Utterly Art Exhibition Space
208 South Bridge Road Level 2
Tel: 6226 2605 Email: utterlyart@pacific.net.sg
The exhibition continues to 20th October 2002
As the island of Tahiti was to Paul Gauguin, so Bali has been to countless artists since it was discovered as an island paradise by foreign visitors: a source of wonderment, mystery and inspiration, and a magnet for students of life and inner spirit. Chia Hearn Chek has been similarly intoxicated by the potent brew of picture-postcard scenery, bewitching populace and mystical culture, which keeps him returning to the island incessantly. Living in Bali for the past two years, Chia has revisited academic figure painting like Bonnet and Hofker, unlike the attractive individualized stylizations of many contemporary artists. Has the straightforward depiction of the Balinese figure seen its heyday? How can one continue the tradition?

Sharing Art Ocean & Mountain - Wantilan Teja Samudragiri
Tejakula, North Bali Oct 28 - Nov 1, 2002
This program focuses on the creative arts and discourse in relation to ocean and mountain society. Our dialogue begins with the question of how the arts can benefit the social and economic growth of Bali in balance with the cultural environment. Similar to other Indonesian maritime cultures, the society of Tejakula performs ceremonies such as Mekiis (purification), which are connected with the Pura Segara (ocean pura). These rituals give life to the ocean and create a boundary for the Kampung Nelayan (Fishing Society). Art, human, nature and religiosity are woven together within the context of sesaji (offering).
Infinite Humanity in Sacred Art - Invitation to create Solstice
December 20 –23, 2002 - Circulating Program Site
It was truly a blessing that we were able to create co-operative sharing in 30 cities and villages on the earth for Infinite Humanity; World Religions and Art for Peace and Respect of Life December 21, 2001. It is a testament of the generosity and goodness of humans in harmony with each other, the nature and the source of life.
From that basis of sharing, the idea came that perhaps we could create together annually on December 21 -solstice in Infinite Humanity in Sacred Art . The program could be hosted in a different city each year – spreading and circulating the spirit of sharing together on the earth. Is there a committee of friends and colleagues from one of the co-operating cities or villages who would like to host Infinite Humanity in Sacred Art this December 21, 2002 together with your colleagues or other groups in your society? Or are you interested to support the host location? If you cannot join in that way – are you interested to create a program again in your area? Please let us know.
